Located along the city’s popular Gaya Street, Mad Ben (the MAD stands for Make-A-Difference) is a minimalist and modern café that offers cozy dining experience that is beckoning diners to stay a little longer.
For starters, the Mad Ben Salad is a fresh serving of lettuce, onions, sun dried tomatoe and smoked salmon. If you’re still feeling snacky, order the Cheese Potato Croquette, Herbs Chicken Boxing or White Wine Mussels served with beef bacon.
Mains are served with side salad and your choice of mashed potato or fries. If you are craving for a good juicy lamb shoulder, look no further. Served with the house mint sauce and gravy, the meat is marinated and cooked to perfection. Another signature dish is the tomato-based Pot Roast Beef – so tender, it falls off the bone! Other dishes that deserve a special mention include their Fish and Chips, Chicken Schnitzel, 220g Grain Fed Rib-Eye and 200g Pan Fried Salmon Steak. During festive seasons, the café comes up with a menu of the month in tune with the festivities.
Pizzas, burgers and burritos also make an appearance on Mad Ben Café’s menu. But for a real Sabah-twist, we recommend the Cheesy Tuhau Pizza – tuhau is a type of wild ginger with a pungent smell, often served as a side dish in a Kadazan Dusun kitchen. Love it or loathe it, this special ingredient makes their cheesy pizza one of a kind! If you prefer the classics, then order up the 4-cheese, lamb or vegetarian pizza. Wind up your meal with something sweet. A Pavlova is hard to come in Sabah so if you’re craving for one, Mad Ben Café does not disappoint. The Warm Apple Crumble, served with homemade vanilla custard, may also leave you wanting more. Enjoy all this with a cup of coffee, tea or a classic milkshake. Vegetarian food is also available upon request.
