In Sabah, exploring local cuisine would not be complete without noodles on the menu! Many liken it to ‘soul food’ for the locals. One of the more popular noodle haunts in KK is none other than Restoran How Kee in Beverly Hills. Since 2009, they are renowned for their fish noodles, a breakfast and lunch staple for diners in the area. At first glance, it seems almost impossible to grab a seat let alone a whole table but rest assured, it’s worth the wait.
The food hero here is none other than the fish noodle soup – a concoction of noodles and fresh fish in a steaming bowl of clear broth. The not-so-secret ingredient is the tomatoes which brings the sweet and sour flavour to the soup. It also alleviates any strong fishy taste and smell.
The other must-tries include the the ‘Yu Chap’ (mixed fish), which features assorted fish-based items including fillet, fishball, fish cakes, fish paste and innards, served with your choice of noodles, mee hoon (thin noodles) or koay teow (flat rice noodles) The Seafood Tom Yam is also a hit with its strong and spicy flavours. If soups are not your thing, order the dried noodle version or as the locals call it, ‘kon lau mee’. There’s a great range of top quality fish for you to choose from including Giant Groupers, Giant Tiger Groupers and Sea Bream.
This is definitely a no-frills eatery and part of the dining experience is to enjoy the meal al fresco, amidst the crowd and queue! But ask any frequent diner here and they will assure it’s definitely worth the wait.
